Are you aware of being in a co-dependent relationship? Is there possessiveness, neediness and a need to control driving your interactions? Do you guilt trip or create drama to get attention - however unconsciously? Do you feel embarrassed at feeling jealous?

Many of us carry our fears into our relationships and look to them as a place of comfort and security. The parts of ourselves that were abandoned or neglected as children revel in the love of a caring relationship. However if we don't continue to enquire into our childhood patterns and mature through those earlier wounds we may look to a partner to parent them in the way we wish we'd been parented. Instead of adult to adult interactions, when certain triggers are activated, we may slide into a parent-child dynamic. It's not something to judge yourself for - although most of us do. All of us have these vulnerable scared parts of ourselves. The important thing is to recognise them when they're triggered so they don't cause you to act in ways that push people away or cause resentment - which leads to exactly the outcome you're fearing. This healing can only be done with awareness and compassion, working with your inner child, so he or she feels safe and loved in situations that might otherwise resonate with difficult past events.

Many of us have been brought up in a culture with myths that we'll be rescued or there's a happy ending just around the corner. These options exist but they exist within us not in other people. So instead of giving that power to others and then feeling disappointed that we don't always feel loved, safe or cared for, begin to re-parent the parts of you that are holding childhood fears. There is no more transformative work you can do - and it has a wonderfully relaxing impact on your relationships which can find a more open, secure and authentic footing.
