Bach to Basics - From a Cheerful Mask to Honest Sharing |
|
Do you plaster on a smile no matter what? Do you tell yourself everything's fine or it will all work out, but then grind your teeth, nibble your nails. overeat or hit the bottle as your body expresses your buried worry?
Few things are as harmful to our energy as worry. The more you focus on a problem, the more likely you are to stay stuck or manifest what you don't want. The only thing that's worse is keeping your worries to yourself and putting on a smile when you least feel like it. The cheerful role you play for others will drain you to the point of burnout.
Ignoring or denying issues that require your attention sets up huge internal conflict. Part of you is tugging at your sleeve asking you to face up to an uncomfortable truth or the need for a difficult conversation and the other wants to distract you by staying busy, over-working, hitting the dance floor or binge watching your favourite show with an endless supply of chocolate and your tipple of choice.
This behaviour pattern usually stems from a childhood belief that your feelings don't matter. Your attention may have been constantly focused on conflict outside yourself, so the most important thing was not to add your own troubles to it. Instead you learned not to rock the boat and to go along with the general pretence that everything was fine, even if you were treading on eggshells or you felt constantly threatened by emotional dramas or physical danger. This also meant that you habitually looked outside yourself to take the the emotional temperature rather than noticing what was going on inside yourself.
This situation disconnects your mind from your feelings - your emotions are permanently 'parked' while you keep calm and carry on. We often need this remedy when we've compartmentalised our feelings for too long - perhaps during a time of crisis while we did what was needed to survive. We may also need it if we appear too independent, because if we shared what was really going on we'd feel we were burdening others Those who love us can't find a way to reach us, even when they can see that our avoidant strategies may be harming our physical and mental health.
