It can be easy to get caught in consumerism and lose sight of the reason for getting together over the holiday period. No matter how the media portrays the perfect family gathering, comparisons are never helpful.

This can be a sensitive time for many. A combination of rich food, alcohol, family triggers and memories of past celebrations where maybe there's now a space at the table, can combine to make this an emotional point in the year.

As we head towards the winter solstice put elements in place that will strengthen you. Balance outer and inner connection. Balance giving with receiving. Nobody reads minds, so have courageous conversations. Ask for what you need, whether that's time to yourself, a hug or an honest discussion about gift-giving that doesn't put anyone into debt.

We may be challenged spending time with people we rarely see - or acknowledging that we'd be happier in our own company. Either way it's vital to care for our own energy. Set up regular ways to check in with how you're feeling such as journaling, meditation or visualisations - and keep feeding your soul. That way you can meet this seasonal break with an open and understanding heart that's kind to yourself as well as others.
