When things don't go the way we hope we may resist, resent, get angry or fight back. Sometimes that's appropriate - it builds our courage and backbone - but if that's often your knee-jerk reaction it's worth trying a different approach because staying in chronic resentment or anger is very harmful to our health and relationships.

As Maya Angelou said: 'if you can't change it, change the way you think about it'.

And acceptance is the first step. Once you accept the situation instead of pushing it away, it becomes part of your reality. You can see it clearly without avoidance or distraction. This might take courage, you may feel anxiety, shame, grief, anger, fear, bitterness, regret or embarrassment. You may need support to help you face it, you may need a benevolent witness to enable you to release your feelings - especially if it's something that's been kept a secret. Shame loses its power once it's been named.

The healing power of acceptance begins with seeing the consequences of our past and our reaction to it. We don't need to approve or disapprove - just acknowledge it. If we judge ourselves or others we create victims. Acceptance sets us free and allows us to own our history. Only then can we stop repeating it. I learned this lesson recently with the help of a dear friend and skilled facilitator followed by a bottle of Inner Child Acceptance essence. If you'd like to rewrite part of your history, I'd highly recommend acceptance as a way of finding peace and resolving inner conflict. You don't have to like what happened but until you can accept it, your unresolved feelings will remain as a constant trigger.

Many of us are aware of the harmful impact of chlorine in our drinking water but we absorb far more if we shower or bathe in mains tap water.

At least we can leave tap water to stand until some chlorine's dispersed, whereas in a bath or shower we're breathing it in directly - absorbing it into our lungs and warm open pores.
