I'm always struck by how many of us have blockages in our
throat chakra. I have so many clients who suffered with sore
throats as children followed by thyroid problems as adults.
As Louise Hay points out, thyroid problems are usually caused
by humiliation and lack of fulfillment; a feeling of 'when
will it be my turn?'
Richard Gerber writes in Vibrational Medicine for the 21st
Century that the throat chakra is about the right use of will.
Not to exert our will over others, but the ability to use
our will power for our own good. Self-control and self-discipline
are important if we're to achieve what we really want in life
and if we're to treat others as we want to be treated ourselves,
honestly, openly and without flying off the handle.
Symptoms of Suppression
The throat should also be our instrument of truth which expresses
our values, feelings and beliefs. When we hold back from verbalising
something important to us for fear of how others may react,
we compromise the flow of energy through our throat chakra.
This can lead to thyroid problems, sore throats, gum disease,
cold sores, jaw problems and recurrent headaches. Other signs
of problems with this chakra are issues with alcohol, food
Finding the Source of Denial (!)
The key to resolving throat chakra issues is to trace the
patterns involved. Where did we learn to suppress our voice;
what began the belief that our feelings, needs or opinions
weren't going to be heard or weren't important enough to take
up space? Where did we step aside for someone else? Where
were we shamed for our beliefs? Where did we give our power
Sometimes this is a karmic pattern we see clearly when tracing
our family tree. One client found the answer two generations
back. Her family were in an ethnic minority who had to toe
the line of a foreign power and even change their name to
be 'acceptable'. Others find it in their own childhoods, living
in the shadow of a controlling parent or sibling. Some were
brought up in an oppressive family or school environment where
it wasn't safe to 'be seen'.
Expressing not Suppressing
The more we speak our truth and make choices based on our
true values, the more we're seen by others for who we truly
are. This can feel terrifying; we may trigger and need to
process memories of past humiliation which led to us playing
small, yet this is the path to healing which our throat leads
us to take. Alternatives include taking drugs which suppress
the problem further or eating and drinking to an unhealthy
degree to try and 'gag' ourselves.
